Learning, fun and achievement for all

At Thames View Primary, we are committed to supporting our pupils in all aspects of their development.  Alongside our commitment to helping our pupils achieve academically, we are passionate about supporting them to develop themselves as people so they can manage their lives and contribute positively to society: now and in the future.  Our aim is to support our pupils to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who are able to be actively involved in public life.  We aim to help children live healthy lives that demonstrate and embody our three core school values:  Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Respect: We want to help pupils appreciate and value the people around them and the world they live in; caring for and celebrating their own and other’s achievements and values.

Responsibility: We aim to help all our pupils to show increasing independence in regards to managing themselves, their behaviour, their environment and their resources.

Resilience: We help pupils develop a ‘never give up’ attitude by supporting them to face challenges and overcome problems with a positive mindset.

PSHE

Our Personal Development (PD) curriculum, is delivered through a number of complimentary and supporting means.  In the first instance, each class has a PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) lesson each week, either in a single lesson or spread over the week in short sessions.  These lessons follow the SCARF syllabus and include the following units:

  • Me and My Relationships
  • Valuing Difference
  • Keeping Myself Safe
  • Rights and Respect
  • Being My Best
  • Growing and Changing

PSHE lessons feature discussion opportunities and are intended to be supporting, affirming and empowering sessions for the children.  Often, these lessons occur at times opportune to helping the children reflect on their learning and relationships as experienced that very day.  Our PSHE curriculum includes lessons on E-Safety and Relationships and Health Education (RHE).

RE

The children learn about and explore different beliefs and traditions through our well established RE Discovery curriculum.  This syllabus enables the children to learn about religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.  In RE, we aim to inform children about different religions and then encourage them to share their own opinions and experiences.

Trips & Visitors

Personal Development is also facilitated at Thames View Primary through an extensive Trip and Visitors schedule that is designed to give the children wide and varied experiences of the world around them.  Teachers support pupils to contextualise these experiences so they have impact on pupils’ personal development whilst also being fun for them to take part in.  Pupils learn to value and appreciate the world around them as well as have experiences that they otherwise may not as they engage with society.  Additionally, trips also serve to build community through giving children memorable shared experiences that bond them with their peers. Importantly, our Trips and Visitors schedule is closely aligned to our academic curriculum so that they enrich and engage the pupils in their learning across all the subject disciplines.

Assemblies

Pupils participate in weekly Celebration assemblies where they are rewarded for showing the school values and achieving in their learning over the week.  Additionally, other assemblies take place for such events as: Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Mental Health Awareness Week, World Book Day, Number Day and more.

Wellbeing

Our Personal Development curriculum is supported and enriched by our Wellbeing Team who are available to our pupils to assist them with managing behaviour, mental health and readiness to learn.  This team coordinates work with external services, including counselling provision.  The Wellbeing team do lots of work helping children develop their interpersonal and independence skills.  Our school dogs are based in the Wellbeing Hub and contribute greatly to the children settling in to school and developing essential life skills such as caring, empathy and being responsible.

Thames View Primary School is an inclusive environment.  We ensure that there is equal opportunity for all irrespective of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.  Our PD curriculum promotes the understanding that difference is a positive and that individual characteristics make people unique.

Personal Development at Thames View, delivered through curriculum, assemblies, visits, discussion and literature, develops and deepens pupils' understanding of the fundamental British Values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance.  Pupils explore school and class expectations with teachers and each other, take part in voting for House Captains and can become a part of the School Council.
