At Thames View, Maths helps pupils develop confidence, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills so that they can understand and make sense of the world around them. Pupils learn to think carefully, explain their ideas, spot patterns, make connections and apply mathematical knowledge in everyday situations and across the wider curriculum.
Our Maths curriculum follows a mastery approach, supported by the National Curriculum and the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. We want all pupils to see themselves as mathematicians and to develop the knowledge, resilience and confidence needed to succeed.
How Maths develops Global Citizens
Maths helps pupils become confident problem-solvers who can think logically, make decisions and understand information in the world around them. Through Maths, pupils learn to reason, explain, justify, work systematically and use evidence. They develop the skills needed to manage money, interpret data, understand measures, recognise patterns and solve real-life problems.
This supports our aim of developing responsible Global Citizens who can think critically, make informed choices and approach challenges with resilience.
How we teach Maths
In Maths, pupils revisit prior learning and see where new learning fits in the wider journey. Teachers use carefully sequenced small steps, supported by the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, so that pupils build secure understanding over time.
Pupils use concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract recording to explore mathematical ideas. They develop fluency through regular practice and deepen their understanding through reasoning and problem-solving. Teachers use questioning, partner talk, modelling and feedback to address misconceptions and help pupils explain their thinking clearly.
Fluency, Reasoning and Problem-Solving
Pupils are taught to become fluent in key number facts, procedures and mathematical concepts. Fluency gives children the confidence and efficiency they need to tackle more complex learning.
Alongside fluency, pupils are taught to reason mathematically. They explain their thinking, justify answers, spot patterns, compare methods and investigate whether statements are always, sometimes or never true. Pupils apply their knowledge through problem-solving so that they can use Maths flexibly in different contexts.
Vocabulary and Mathematical Talk
Mathematical vocabulary is taught explicitly and revisited over time. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking using accurate language, sentence stems and stem sentences. Teachers model how to reason clearly so that pupils can describe methods, compare ideas, spot misconceptions and justify their answers.
Inclusion and Removing Barriers
Pupils may have different starting points in number knowledge, fluency, vocabulary, working memory, confidence or previous mathematical experience. Teachers remove barriers through clear modelling, small-step teaching, manipulatives, pictorial representations, stem sentences, guided practice, retrieval, targeted support and carefully chosen tasks.
Pupils with SEND access the same ambitious Maths curriculum, with adaptations made so that they can build secure understanding, confidence and independence over time.
Enrichment and Maths Beyond the Classroom
We want pupils to see that Maths is useful, creative and part of everyday life. Pupils take part in enrichment opportunities such as Number Day, Enterprise Day, mathematical challenges and Times Tables Rock Stars. These experiences help pupils apply fluency, reasoning, teamwork and problem-solving in meaningful contexts.
